Van 19 november t/m 1 december 2006 heb ik
samen met Hemme Batjes een rondreis gemaakt door Zuid-Afrika. Het startpunt was
Kaapstad, vervolgens langs de westkust in noordelijke richting tot aan
Lambertsbay, daar het binnenland in naar Brandvlei. Toen in zuidelijke richting
via Calvinia, Tankwa Karoo National Park richting National Reserve De Hoop.
Daar vandaan weer richting Kaapstad. Het laatste deel van de vakantie hebben we
doorgebracht op het schiereiland zuidelijk van Kaapstad. Een hoogtepunt was
ongetwijfeld de pealartic tocht vanuit Simonstown de volle zee op. Hierbij o.a.
honderden witkopalbatrossen gezien en natuurlijk ook andere interessante
zeevogels.

A Cape Town Pelagics trip left Simon's
Town on Tuesday 28 November, with Dave Christie skippering Obsession, and
guided by Ross Wanless.
We were very lucky with the weather, with
no weekend trips going for the whole month.
We got to the point in good time, but there was quite a bit of wind at
the surface and there was precious little activity – a few terns and gannets,
but no feeding and no skuas in evidence.
As we moved into deeper waters, conditions ameliorated and we had the
makings of a cracking day on the open seas. Dave picked up a trawler early on,
and we arrived in time to enjoy the
carnival of birds that were scavenging
behind the boat. A second trawler was spotted a few miles further, so when the
activity died down, we headed over to it. This time we spend a good hour in the
wake of the boat, soaking up the spectacle.
After about a half hour, the first GREAT-WINGED PETREL came past. Although
not everyone got on to it as it got lost in the crowd, a second bird arrived
from the opposite side a minute later, and everyone was able to enjoy the
views. We found all the regular species, with the exception of Northern
Giant-Petrels. Despite seeing in excess of 20 Southern GPs, not one positive ID
came up with the Northern. Surprisingly, there were only 3 Storm-Petrels, all
Wilson's. It was good to have a handful of Great Shearwaters knocking about
again. A brief but enjoyable highlight was a single LONG-TAILED SKUA. We
stopped off at two longliners on the way home, but they had fewer birds and
species
behind them, so we didn't linger more than
a half hour. There were two surprises inside the bay on the way home. First we
got onto an Arctic Skua, the only one of the trip. Second was the revival of
the Bank Cormorant colony at Partridge Point, where at least four Bank
Cormorant nests were visible amongst the White-breasted Cormorants, which had
usurped the nests of the Banks over the past few months.
